The Most Under-Used Savings Tool in Malaysia
On a RM 10,000 annual insurance spend, the difference between claiming correctly vs incorrectly can be RM 600–1,400 in taxes. Every year.
The Two Insurance Relief Categories

Category 1: Life Insurance + EPF
Maximum: RM 3,000/year (combined)
What qualifies: Life insurance premiums, term life premiums, EPF contributions.
Important: If your annual EPF contribution already exceeds RM 3,000, life insurance premiums get zero relief — the bucket is full.
Example: EPF contribution = RM 2,400. You have RM 600 remaining for life insurance under this bucket.
Category 2: Medical & Education Insurance
Maximum: RM 3,000/year (separate bucket)
What qualifies: Medical/hospitalisation insurance, critical illness premiums, education insurance.
This is the most under-claimed bucket. Many don't realise medical card premiums qualify here.
Calculating Your Tax Saving
| Chargeable Income | Tax Rate | Saving per RM 1,000 relief |
|---|---|---|
| RM 35,001 – 50,000 | 8% | RM 80 |
| RM 50,001 – 70,000 | 13% | RM 130 |
| RM 70,001 – 100,000 | 21% | RM 210 |
| RM 100,001 – 250,000 | 24% | RM 240 |
Example: Income RM 80,000 (21%). Fully claiming RM 6,000 = RM 1,260 saved/year. Over 20 years at 5% growth: RM 41,600 extra wealth.
4 Common Mistakes
Mistake 1: Letting EPF absorb all of Category 1 — buy more medical insurance (Category 2 has its own bucket).
Mistake 2: Not claiming ILP medical rider separately — get annual statement showing insurance vs investment split, claim only the insurance portion.
Mistake 3: Forgetting family policies — you can claim for spouse (no income) and children's policies.
Mistake 4: Claiming in the wrong year — relief is for the year premium is paid, not when coverage starts.
Optimal Structure for Maximum Relief
| Policy | Annual Premium | Relief Category | Relief Claimed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Term life (RM 500k) | RM 1,500 | Category 1 | RM 1,500 |
| Medical card | RM 2,400 | Category 2 | RM 2,400 |
| Critical illness rider | RM 600 | Category 2 | RM 600 |
| Total | RM 4,500 | RM 4,500 |
At 21% tax rate: RM 945 back annually. Net insurance cost: RM 3,555/year.
